Transumanza 2024

A few weekends ago we had the pleasure of taking part in our town's 2024 Transumanza, which is, you may recall from our post on last year's event, the practice, or, in official animal husbandry-speak, transhumance, of moving livestock from one grazing ground to another in a seasonal cycle, typically to lowlands in winter and highlands in summer.

This year's two day event took place a month earlier due to drought conditions in Sicily, and was also our first time doing both days. Last year, we did just the march from the valley to the town. But this time, we met our special, friendly herd again the next morning to finish the transfer up into the Nebrodi mountains, where they will stay until the Fall.
